Overview

The Reese bass is built from at least two saw waves tuned slightly apart from each other. That tiny detune creates natural phase movement — the sound feels alive without you needing heavy automation.

It originated in early jungle and drum & bass, but it’s everywhere now. You’ll hear it in modern trap, drill, techno, hyperpop, cinematic production — anytime a track needs a bass that feels textured instead of flat.

At its core, the Reese is simple:

  • Two or more oscillators
  • Slight detune (usually 5–20 cents apart)
  • Low-pass filtering to control harshness
  • Optional chorus, distortion, or phasing for extra movement

The magic happens in the interaction between the oscillators. As they drift against each other, subtle beating occurs — that’s what gives the Reese its signature wobble and depth.

Why it works

A standard sub can feel static. The Reese adds motion without sacrificing weight. It fills stereo space (if you let it), and it creates tension even when holding one note.

How to shape it

  • Keep the lowest layer mono for punch.
  • Add a mid-layer Reese above ~100–150Hz for stereo width.
  • Automate filter cutoff slowly for evolving sections.
  • Distort before filtering for more harmonic grit.
