808 Glide

A sliding 808 bass that moves smoothly between notes instead of jumping discretely. It’s one of the defining sounds of modern trap and drill production.

Overview

The 808 glide is created by enabling portamento (also called glide) on a bass sound so that when two notes overlap, the pitch bends from one to the next instead of switching instantly. The result is a fluid, vocal-like movement in the low end.

In trap and drill, this technique is often used to add melodic motion to otherwise minimal drum patterns. Instead of just anchoring the root note, the 808 becomes expressive — sliding up into hooks, falling into transitions, or weaving around the kick pattern.

The glide only triggers when notes overlap in most DAWs, so timing matters. Producers intentionally overlap MIDI notes to control how long the pitch bend lasts. A shorter glide creates a quick flick; a longer glide turns the bass into a lead-like line.

Sonically, the 808 glide adds tension and groove at the same time. It can make a drop feel heavier, a hook feel catchier, or a beat feel more alive without adding new instruments.

Common in: trap, drill, rage, hyperpop, melodic rap.
